Okay I know I’m a few days late but I still wanted to say ‘Happy new year‘!!
It’s technically always a new year so it’s hard to be late… Right?
Some background knowledge that I learnt today from my master’s I found really interesting. Birthdays in China are not so important as the new year festivities, for one or sometimes even two weeks the majority of people don’t work. It is a worldly event and has nothing to do with Buddhism other than the fact that some Buddhists in China will celebrate it. The Buddhist alternatives would be something like vessakfest or ulambanafest, however for our temple it is a tradition to celebrate Chinese New years as we are a Chinese branch of Buddhism (Chan, alternatively zen in Japanese).
Traditionally presents are given on this day in the form of a red envelope with money inside to symbolise a year of good fortune, or additionally a Clementine to symbolise health, happiness and good luck if you want to conceive a child in the year to come… Who would consider it lucky to conceive a child?! Only joking of course.
The Chinese New Year is based on a different timescale to the western world. For thousands of years the calendar has been based on the sun AND the moon cycles making the year slightly longer than western calendars. Originally the Chinese calendars were created so that the previous emperors could know precisely the correct time to perform certain rituals, ceremonies and proceedings. And then of course was well used amongst agriculture to farm the seasons as best as possible!
So I hope everyone has a fantastic, fortunate and healthy year! I am wood pig, and I hope that all other pigs have a great year and make the most of it – Amitabha 🐖
